Mets place Rodriguez on restricted list

The  New York  Mets placed closer Francisco Rodriguez  on  the restricted  list on  Thursday following  an incident with a family member on Wednesday night.

Rodriguez will miss the next two games without pay.

Following  Wednesday night’s  6-2 loss to Colorado, the right-hander allegedly punched his father-in-law in the face in the family room at Citi Field. He was then  taken  into custody by police  and was charged with third-degree assault after  his  father-in-law was hospitalized  with facial bruises and minor head injuries.

“Ownership   and   the  organization  are  very  disappointed  in  Francisco’s inappropriate  behavior and  we take  this matter  very seriously,”  said Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon in a statement Thursday.

The  28-year-old Rodriguez,  who  is 4-2  with  a 2.24  ERA  this season,  has converted his last four save opportunities and has 25 for the year. He did not pitch in Wednesday’s game.

To  fill  the roster  spot,  the  Mets  recalled right-handed  reliever  Ryota Igarashi  from Triple-A Buffalo.  He was 0-1 with a 7.91 ERA in 22 appearances for the Mets earlier this season.
