Nationals agree to deal with top overall pick Harper

The Washington  Nationals and top overall pick  Bryce Harper have agreed to terms on a major league contract just before the midnight deadline on Monday.

Harper,  who the Nationals will covert from catcher to outfielder, is only 17- years-old.  He has had much hype surrounding him since foregoing his final two years of high school to enter junior college.

This  season, Harper  played for  the College  of Southern  Nevada and  hit 31 homers  and  drove in 98  RBI in just  66 games. His  home run total broke the school’s  previous record of 12, and his .443 batting average and .526 on-base percentage  helped him  earn the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors.

Harper  also captured  the Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the best amateur player in the country.

This  is the  second straight top overall pick the Nationals have signed after inking pitcher Stephen Strasburg last season.

He gets a $6.25 million signing bonus in five equal payments of $1.25 million: 30 days after appoval and each July 1 from 2011 through 2014.

Harper receives salaries of $500,000 each in 2011 and 2012, $750,000 in 2013, $900,000 in 2014 and $1 million in 2015.
