Phillies activate Utley, designate Dobbs

The Philadelphia Phillies activated second baseman  Chase  Utley from the 15-day  disabled list on Tuesday and designated infielder Greg Dobbs for assignment.

The  31-year-old  Utley has been on  the shelf since suffering a torn ligament in  his  right  thumb while  sliding  into  second  base  on June  28  against Cincinnati.

Utley  was placed  on the DL the next  day and underwent surgery on July 1. He appeared  in four  rehabilitation games  for Single-A  Clearwater and  went 3- for-12  with a pair of triples and one run batted in. Over 72 games this year, Utley  is hitting .277  with 11 homers, 37 RBI and 49 runs scored to go with a .383 on-base percentage.

Dobbs has struggled mightily this season, hitting a mere .191 with four homers and 14 RBI in 76 contests.
