Saints set to add Betts to backfield

The  New  Orleans Saints  have  reportedly agreed to terms with running back Ladell Betts.

The  Times-Picayune cites  Saints officials as confirming the move, although a contract has not officially been signed.

A  move became necessary to beef up the backfield when the club waived/injured running  back  Lynell Hamilton on  Saturday. Hamilton suffered a torn anterior cruciate  ligament in  his  right knee  during a  combined  practice with  New England earlier in the week.

Betts  was  part of a  wholesale 10-player veteran  release by the Redskins in March  and had  earlier worked out for  the Saints. The paper put the contract terms at close to $750,000 for the 2010 season.

A former second-round pick out of Iowa by the Redskins in 2002, Betts formed a rushing  tandem  alongside Clinton Portis over  the past few years. The eight- year  veteran was limited to 10 games last year after sustaining damage to the MCL and ACL in his left knee during a Week 11 contest with Dallas.

He ran for 210 yards and two scores on 56 carries and filled in as the starter for  an  injured Portis his final  two games. The 30-year-old’s best season in Washington  came  in 2006  when he racked  up 1,154 yards  and rushed for four touchdowns. He also added 445 yards and an additional score on 53 catches over 16 games.
