South Carolina has dismissed quarterback Stephen Garcia from the football team, the school announced Tuesday.
The school did not give a specific reason why Garcia was dismissed, only alluding to the fact that he did not follow guidelines set when he was reinstated to the team in August.
Garcia had been suspended in the spring for violating team rules.
“For Stephen to return to and remain with the football squad this fall, we agreed on several established guidelines,” said athletics director Eric Hyman. “Unfortunately, he has not been able to abide by those guidelines and has therefore forfeited his position on the roster. We wish him the best of luck as he moves forward in life.”
Garcia has played in five games for the 15th-ranked Gamecocks this season, passing for 844 yards and four touchdowns, with nine interceptions. He finishes his career having completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 7,597 yards and 47 touchdowns, with 41 interceptions.
