The United States won the women’s team title at the gymnastics world championships on Tuesday, thanks to especially strong performances on the vault and floor exercise portions of competition.
The American women’s team finished with a total score of 179.411 to earn gold. Defending champion Russia placed second with a score of 175.329, while China (172.820) was third.
The United States had the highest combined scores for the vault and floor exercise. McKayla Maroney scored 16.033 on the vault to lead the Americans and Jordyn Wieber — who competed in all four events — had a team-high score of 14.766 during the floor exercise.
The Americans won the title despite not having Alicia Sacramone, part of the silver medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and last year’s world champion in the vault. She suffered a torn Achilles tendon in training last week.
